How to set up automatic email to SMS alerts

Notifyre’s Email to SMS service allows you to automatically send SMS messages when you receive an email alert, so you can stay informed even when you’re away from your inbox.

With Notifyre’s Email to SMS service, you can create an email rule in your email client that will automatically send an SMS alert straight to your mobile when you receive an email alert from your system.

Example workflow:

  1. Software generates email alert
  2. Email client rule triggers
  3. Rule creates new email with SMS message
  4. Send new email to Notifyre Email to SMS gateway
  5. Notifyre converts email to SMS
  6. SMS delivered to recipient mobile

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to set up an automated SMS alert based on an email alert triggered by your software.

Step 1. Sign Up to Notifyre

  • Create your Notifyre account and log in.

  • Get a virtual SMS number and top up your account send funds.

Step 2. Configure Email to SMS

Step 3. Create an Email Rule in Your Email Client

💡Please note not all email providers allow rules to support email to SMS.

⛔Gmail email to SMS forwarding is not supported.

Example of Creating an Outlook Rule & SMS email alert

  1. Create a new rule
    • In Outlook, go to Rules > Manage Rules & Alerts.
    • Select New Rule.
    • Use 'Apply rule on messages I receive and click Next
  2. Define the condition
    • Select the condition that best fits your needs.

    • Click the underlined blue text to specify details.


    Example:

    Condition: with specific words in the subject line

    Word: Urgent


  3. Set the action
    • Choose have server reply using a specific message.

    • Click the underlined blue text to create your automated email.



  4. Configure the new email
    • To address:
      • For Australian SMS: smsnumber@{accountid}.sms.notifyre.com
      • For United States SMS: smsnumber@{accountid}.sms.us.notifyre.com
    • Subject (optional): This will appear as the Message ID/Campaign Name in your Notifyre activity reports.
    • Body: Enter your SMS message.
    Tip: Remove email signatures or unnecessary text so only the alert content is sent as an SMS.
  5. Click Save & Close. Then click Apply to activate your rule.



Step 5. Test your email to SMS alert rule

Send an email that matches your rule criteria to confirm the SMS is delivered.

Before Testing your Email to SMS alert, check the following:

Funds available: Log in to your Notifyre account and ensure you have sufficient credit.

Character limits: SMS exceeding your chosen character limit will fail.

Email body required: The SMS will use the email body text — ensure it’s not blank and remove unwanted signatures.

Correct sending address:

  • AU: smsnumber@{accountid}.sms.notifyre.com
  • US: smsnumber@{accountid}.sms.us.notifyre.com

✅ Account ID: Verify you’re using the correct account ID.

Country code: Always include the full country code in the recipient’s mobile number.

  • US mobile: 61487799888 → To field: 61487799888@61FKQ4A1.sms.notifyre.com
  • US mobile: 13072221234 → To field: 13072221234@61FKQ4A1.sms.us.notifyre.com
