🔜Registration will be available in your Notifyre account soon!

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is introducing a new mandatory registration system for all alphanumeric SMS Sender IDs used to send SMS across Australia.

What’s changing?

From 1 July 2026, all businesses using alphanumeric Sender IDs must:

  • Register each Sender ID with the ACMA

  • Have the registration verified by an authorised ABN contact

  • Comply with ACMA’s naming rules

Unregistered Sender IDs may:
  • display to recipients as “Unverified”, or
  • be blocked by telecommunications providers.

Why is ACMA implementing changes?

Scammers often impersonate trusted organisations using fake SenderIDs like “AusPost” or “myGov”. To prevent impersonation and protect consumers, the ACMA is introducing a verified national register for all Sender IDs used in Australia. This will improve trust and significantly reduce SMS impersonation scams.

What you can do now to prepare

You don’t need to take action yet, but preparing now will help ensure there are no disruptions to your SMS delivery.

1. Review your current alphanumeric Sender IDs

Check which Sender IDs you use in the Notifyre Dashboard. Remove any Sender IDs that are no longer required. This reduces how many Sender IDs will need registration later.

2. Ensure your Sender IDs meet ACMA format requirements

Your alphanumeric Sender ID must:
  • Be 3–11 characters long
  • Start with a letter
  • Include letters (may include numbers or symbols)
  • Not contain non-Latin characters
  • Not be numbers only
  • Not start or end with a space or underscore
  • Only use these symbols: + - _ &
  • Does not contain restricted terms
If your Sender IDs do not meet these rules, consider updating them ahead of time.

3. Confirm your ABN and authorised contacts

The ACMA will verify the person submitting the registration against your Australian Business Register (ABR). Make sure your ABR listing includes the correct:
  • authorised contacts
  • business details
  • ABN status

4. Inform your internal team

Let your marketing, IT, and compliance staff know about upcoming changes so they can prepare.

Sender ID FAQs

Will this affect numeric only Sender IDs?

No. This only affects alphanumeric Sender IDs used by businesses.

Is there a cost to register?

The ACMA has indicated there may be no fees initially, but final pricing has not been confirmed.

Can a non‑ABN entity register a Sender ID?

The ACMA is still working on this. Early guidance suggests non‑ABN entities may need to register through a slightly different process.
